The big debate

The day had come, the day of the debtate! It was me and Pearse against Matthew and Paul and we were arguing in favour of "Good design can be cheap". When we first saw this debate title it was a certainty as there is no doubt in my mind that good design can be cheap. We began preparing our argument,
My first point was Ikea, it was always a sure bet I was going to use this in my piece as it is simply a great example. As of 2008 it was the worlds largest furniture retailer. It is known for its modern architectual designs however it is most known for its attention to cost control and it is known for providing quality iteams at low cost, I mean almost every individual will have purchased something for Ikea at least once, the lights used for photography in the room in the studio and in the computer room were bought in Ikea and they do a great job, they are between 10 and 20 euro in Ikea and they look great aswell.
My second point was the fact that there are examples of how "good design can be cheap" around us every day in our lives. I argued that everybody in the room had used some form of kitchen utensil in the last day or so and a lot of people even had a lighter in their pocket. These designs are timeless, they have been around for a long time and are perfected, they are cheap for everyone, be it the manufacturer, the consumer, anybody! They are also great examples of good design because they set out to achieve a task and they do it exceptionally.
These were my two points and they would have sounded good if I didnt get an awful dose of the nerves when it came my turn to state my piece. I never thought in a million years I would have gotten so nervous and I spoke fast so that it would just be over. Aswell as learning about examples of how good design can be cheap I also learned I need to practise on speaking in fron of groups of people as being nervous while doing this is something I must overcome if I ever want to present my work successfully. All in all I felt it was an interesting class and any day you learn something new is a productive day.
